Is GFA World Working in Countries with Water Scarcity?

In 2022, Concern Worldwide U.S. put together a list of 10 places that ranked at the top of countries with water scarcity or water stress. Other organizations have compiled similar lists, with the order being slightly different or with an additional country or two. These lists include Sudan, Iraq, Nepal, Niger, Burkina Faso, Turkey, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Lebanon.[1]

GFA World is working diligently in Asia and parts of Africa to provide clean drinking water and sanitation facilities. Many of the areas where GFA is active are experiencing water crisis, including the following countries:
  • Bangladesh – More than 1.8 million people lack access to improved water sources, while 36 million do not have sanitation facilities.[2]
  • Myanmar – It is estimated the 10 million people in this country don’t have clean water and 11 million don’t have sanitation facilities.[3]
  • Nepal – Nepal is the second most water-abundant country, but its infrastructure can’t meet the demand of its people.[4] According to UNICEF, “10.8 million people in Nepal do not have access to improved sanitation and 3.5 million do not have access to basic water services.”[5]
  • Rwanda – In this African country, only 57 percent of the population has access to safe drinking water within 30 minutes of their home.[6]
  • Sri Lanka – Sri Lanka provides an interesting study in water and sanitation needs. The Sri Lanka Demographic Health Survey reports that 90 percent of households have access to safe drinking water and sanitation. However, the World Bank point out, “there are strong spatial differences with only 36 percent of people having access to piped water and 2 percent to piped sewerage.”[7]

What Do I Need to Know about the Global Poverty Rate?

Statisticians are getting better at measuring the global poverty rate every year. The World Bank is one group working hard to accurately measure it so that the extent of the problem is fully known and so that progress can be measured. [1] Through governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), we can more clearly see the last decade of progress and the most recent effects driving poverty rates. Sub-Saharan Africa has been one area difficult to measure, but new data shows an overall reduction in the percentage of those in poverty. Unfortunately, there is an increase in total number of people living at or below the official poverty rate of $1.90 per day. [2] That doesn’t mean that all hope is lost. Generational Poverty: A Cycle Not Worth Repeating

The cycle of generational poverty can seem impossible to break. Children inherit what their parents teach and show them. a joint report from Ascend: The Aspen Institute and Bernard van Leer Foundation affirms this. “What young children learn from the adults who raise and care for them lays the foundation for future social, emotional, language, and cognitive growth,” the report says. 1 Children raised in a generational poverty mindset often lack the tools they need to succeed or achieve a better life than that of their parents. As adults, these individuals often then raise their children in poverty similar to that of their own childhoods, and the cycle perpetuates.
